National Security

underline

As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, ensuring our national security and strong U.S. leadership abroad are among my top priorities. From advocating for an end to the world’s worst humanitarian crisis in Yemen, to tackling China’s predatory economic practices, there is no shortage of threats that must be addressed. I am dedicated to protecting America’s interests both at home and abroad, and keeping Hoosiers safe.

What I've Done

As we pursue negotiations with the Taliban and work to end our involvement in Afghanistan, Congress must be a part of the process to ensure that our mission is brought to a responsible end. I co-led the Ensuring a Durable Afghanistan Peace Act of 2019 (S. 2953) to provide congressional oversight of the comprehensive Afghanistan peace process.

Global corruption is often at the root of conflict, humanitarian suffering, and political crises. I am proud to co-lead the Combating Global Corruption Act of 2019 (S. 1309) to fight international corruption and hold those in power responsible for their actions.

It is imperative that Congress closely protect its war-declaring powers. I co-led bipartisan legislation (S.J. Res. 13) to repeal the 1991 and 2002 Authorizations for Use of Military Force (AUMF) against Iraq. Additionally, since 2017, I have advocated for a new AUMF targeting ISIS.

To bolster our national security tools, we need to strengthen our rules governing individuals who work on behalf of foreign entities. I joined a group of Senators to do just that by introducing the Foreign Agents Disclosure and Registration Enhancement Act of 2019 (S. 1762) aimed at ensuring public awareness of lobbying campaigns pushed by foreign powers.
