Young Announces Over $17 Million for Northwest Indiana’s Marquette Greenway Project

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) today announced that Northwest Indiana will receive a RAISE grant totaling more than $17 million for the Marquette Greenway Project. The grant application, which was submitted by the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC), will complete over 55 miles of trail through three Hoosier counties to support economic development in Northwest Indiana. In July, Senator Young sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Transportation in support of the application.

“The project will allow 55 miles of trail to pass through three Indiana counties: Lake County, Porter County, and La Porte County. The project’s completion will directly benefit a local population of 130,000 residents, and provide interconnections throughout the Chicagoland region. Trails have proven to be a significant factor in improving quality of life, benefiting community health, and spurring economic development. The completion of the Marquette Greenway will improve the vitality of Northwest Indiana’s economy and way of life,” Senator Young wrote in the letter.

NIRPC serves the counties of Lake, Porter, and La Porte and has played a critical role in furthering the region’s economic progress.

Ty Warner, NIRPC Executive Director said, “We greatly appreciate Senator Young’s support of the economic transformation happening in Northwest Indiana, and the Marquette Greenway is but the latest example of a truly transformational project with impacts far beyond its face value. This 60-mile active, outdoor transportation link creates enormous opportunities for Indiana residents to get connected to the incredibly unique ecosystem on the southern shore of Lake Michigan. But even beyond that, it creates a prime network to activate and grow the vitality of every community along the way. We are incredibly grateful and excited for what this project means to our region, and we can’t wait to get started.”
